Nikon Lens Question
Posted by SpikeSep 2
For any experts out there ….
I bought a Fotodiox adapter that allows me to put Nikon lenses on my Sony NEX 5 camera. However, I jumped the gun on this and didn’t really read up on it in advance and discovered now that it’s too late. More expensive adapters include an aperture control ring; this one doesn’t have one. And it’s important because:
* Nikon G lenses don’t have an aperture ring on the lens
* When you take a Nikon G lens off the camera, the aperture goes to the smallest opening
So when I put the lens on this adapter and put the lens and adapter on the Sony, I’m stopped all the way down to f/16 or f/22 depending on the lens. Which of course is of only limited use at best.
So my question is: is there some way to get the Nikon lens to remain in the wide open position when off the camera – aside from constant pressure from my finger on the aperture level on the back of the lens?
Or do I just stick this up on eBay and then go out and buy one of the more expensive adapter rings? (sigh)

Call me old-fashioned but if you want the utility and functionality of an SLR, buy a damn SLR. What you’re doing is akin to putting high heels on a pig. It might have nice shoes, but it’s still a pig.

First of all, I own a DSLR, and a damned nice one to boot. And you should realize that already because why would I have Nikon lenses to put on the camera if I didn’t have a Nikon SLR?
Second, the Sony NEX-5 is pretty darned far away from being a pig – it has an APS-C size sensor, the same as many current DSLRs, it simply doesn’t have a mirror or optical viewfinder. It serves a different function for me and serves it quite well. And if I could use my 6 Nikon lenses on it rather than buying half a dozen Sony lenses for it, it would make sense on multiple levels.

These are going to be manual focus on the nex right? A couple of ais lenses might work, 28 2.8 and 85 1.8ais are small, have infinity stop, cheap and really nice to manual focus. They also look cool and meter on a d300.
