How Can You Not Love China?
Posted by SpikeDec 30
Just in the past week or so ….
China executes a British citizen for carrying a suitcase of drugs for someone else, ignoring all pleas for clemency and the likelihood that he was probably mentally ill and didn’t understand what he was doing. This is a man who was running a minicab service in the UK and moved to Poland to start his own airline. A man who claimed he spoke with the angel Gabriel and who recorded a single that he said would bring about world peace. The Chinese authorities refused all requests to have psychiatrists conduct a full examination of his mental capabilities. When British Prime Minister Brown issued a strongly worded statement about the execution, China responded by saying, “Nobody has the right to speak ill of China’s judicial sovereignty.” Uh, China, actually, yeah, everyone in the world has the right to speak ill of China’s judicial sovereignty, except perhaps if they live in China. It’s this little thing called “freedom of speech.”
Hey, over in Shanghai, they renovated a bridge over Suzhou Creek. The piers of the crossing were supposed to be solid concrete. Area residents complained that they saw huge holes in the piers but the contractor said, oh no, those are just “decorative features.” Turns out they didn’t stuff those piers with concrete, they used rubbish and foam from nearby landfills. You make a little extra profit that way. All those buildings that collapsed in Sichuan killing thousands in the earthquake? That new Shanghai apartment building that just fell over one day? Not gonna happen to this bridge, I’m sure.
A national audit in China has concluded that in the first 11 months of the year, government officials “misused or embezzled” approximately US$35 BILLION. “Auditors said government officials engaged in everything from money laundering and issuing fraudulent loans to cheating the government through the sale or purchase of state land or mining rights.”
Oh, wait, my China visa expires today. Gotta get to CTS to renew it before the next immigration lockdown. I’m sure they don’t read my blog but just in case, forget everything I just wrote.

If the bridge collapases you get executed, you get caught embezzling you get executed. Brave people – wouldn’t happen in the west.

In any way even you are not working for a real company right now try to apply APEC Business travel card. You are a permanent resident and entitled to do so. It takes some time (around 6 months) but in the end when you have it you will have many visa free countries on it: Japan, Vietnam & CHINA !!! Maybe BC magazine can support your application. When I applied mine our company was still in the very early stage so the requirement for an annual financial report we could not satisfy. I called them and told them we are “very young company”and they immediately without any further questions proceeded the application . If you need any further info feel free to come back to me. The Apec card is valid for three years and can be renewed without problems.

I’ll say this, that’s an interesting way to look at this!

Never thought about that … I don’t need a visa for Japan, BC has no business in PRC so an application via them wouldn’t hold water. I’ve always just gotten a tourist visa for China and assume this time I will do the same. But come my next job, whenever, whatever that is, I’ll definitely keep your recommendation in mind, thanks.

APEC card costs ~HK$500, much cheaper than the thousands of HK$ for a 3 yr China Visa, and also covers most places in SE Asia where Westerners need to get Visas on entry, eg Vietnam, Indonesia. It also lets you jump the immigration line when entering entries via a special APEC lane. All in all, it;s a good thing and very easy to get.
It’s a one page application form (ID900 from HK Immigration Dept website) that basically just asks your name, employer and HKID / passport numbers; all you need to send in with the form is passport & HKID card copies and a “support letter” from your employer. Mine just said “he needs to travel for business reasons within the APEC economies”; I guess BC Mag could say that you are travelling for writing assignments – no need for them to have business in PRC or anywhere. I got my card without any further questions, seemed like an automatic rubber-stamp process to me.

Sorry, forgot to say, no need to submit any company financial info. Also, more info on the scheme at http://www.businessmobility.org as well as the HK Imm Dept website

No need to have a business in PRC for application of APEC card. Need HK perm ID card and some business in HK – thats all. It is worth doing it.
