If I don't click on something, I don't expect to have my view obscured by something I didn't ask for, that then lingers, prolonging the agony. I would like to be able to move my mouse pointer around, scroll down the page etc in peace, only being served with content (especially when self-serving on the part of the site developer) at the point that I request it.
