“Big” Joke
Posted by SpikeNov 24
Well, a joke from the movie Big. A huge hit in its day, which was 1988. If you recall, Tom Hanks has to get a job. He and his friend look through the classified section (remember that?) of the newspaper (remember that?) and see a help wanted ad for a “computer operator.” “Oh, they use HP3000s!” “You know how to use that?” “Well, it’s an old system but yeah.” 21 years later, my former employer still runs some critical applications on the HP3000. Probably funny if you worked or still work there, actually kind of sad.
Please note that I’ve retitled the “BC Magazine columns” page to More Spike! (though the URL for that page remains the same as it was before). This is a page where I’ll be posting links to stuff I’ve written elsewhere – right now focusing in on the most recent stuff, columns and articles in BC Magazine. Longer term, I plan to add in some older content as well. I’ve been getting published on and off for almost 30 years and most of it’s not available online but I saved most of it and so perhaps I’ll scan in and post some of these things.
I’ve been spending a lot of time this morning on that page, trying to reformat both the look and the content to make it more appealing and useful. It’s not entirely finished yet but there’s enough there so you can see where I’m going with it.
